The Department of Early Childhood Education at the Faculty of Education of Åbo Akademi University educates kindergarten teachers in Swedish.

We have nearly 120students and around 20 staff members. All in all, the Åbo Akademi University has 7 000 students on four campuses in Turku, Vaasa and Jakobstad.
Our students become both certified kindergarten teachers and Bachelors of Education. The future kindergarten teachers study education specializing in early childhood education as their major subject. The degree programme qualifies the students to working with preschool children. After a completed bachelor’s degree it is possible to continue studying in the master’s degree programme which qualifies the students for daycare management posts. Furthermore, it is possible to undertake postgraduate and research studies after completing the master’s degree.
Researchers at the Department of Early Childhood Education and the Research Center for Child Pedagogy (Center för barnpedagogisk forskning – CBF) conduct research in the field of child education and pedagogy. The research focuses on children’s learning and learning environments, ethics and values as well as the professional development of kindergarten teachers.
The research on children’s learning and learning environment studies the musical learning environment, educators as language models and second language learning through immersion. The central themes in the research on ethics and values are children’s rights and gender equality and equity in daycare and preschool. the research also contributes to the professional development of kindergarten teachers by increasing their skills.
